In the first half of the 20th century, when the mafia reigned in society and was a staple of media headlines, high-profile killings were much more common and equally as graphic. Most gangsters became famous for the severity of their crimes: the drugs, fortunes they accumulated and their ruthless murders, which often occurred in broad daylight. Its operations flourished mainly in Chicago and New York and began to diversify into illegal gambling, loans and drug trafficking, amongst many other criminal activities. For decades, these groups have been active in several countries, especially in Europe, Asia, the United States and Latin America.Īs for the American mafia, which originated in Sicily, Italy, came to power during the prohibition. Gangsters are members of criminal organisations known for their illegal activities, particularly drug smuggling, gambling, and murder.
